Real Estate Is Changing

The Old And The New

What are our core national values? I'm not just talking about the obvious ones like our national language: American, our favorite sport: "real" football, and our national past times: road rage, line dancing, and Survivor. I'm talking about those core values that created this great big land of ours. Like avoiding paying taxes, and freedom from tyranny. The main word to focus on here is freedom. This word strikes to the core of what it means to be an American.

What is freedom? I like to define freedom as the absence of restraint. That means any type of restraint weather it is physical bondage, interference in ones life and personal matters, denial of equal political access, or the restraint of information. These are very real ways freedoms can be denied, and all are very serious. As an American, having freedom is a central theme to what makes us a great nation.

Today I want to talk to you about an abuse of freedom happening right now; the denial of information. I'm not just talking about the denial of information about why Janet Jackson looks so good at age 45 (even though it is incredibly hard to find that information), I'm talking about the gross restraint of information in the real estate industry.

The real estate industry works today much as it did in the 1950's. If you are trying to sell your home, the choices you have in which to notify the public about your home are limited, unless you know martins who will fly around and post pictures of your properties on big blue buildings. Otherwise, you can go to your local hardware store and pick up a for-sale-by-owner sign, put it in your front yard, and hope somebody drives by. You can tell everyone you know about your house for sale. You can make flyers about your house and distribute them in your community. When none of these work, you can pay to have your property listed in your local newspaper and hope that somebody sees it and call with a "good" offer. If none of this produces a buyer, you can call your friendly neighborhood real estate professional, and get your property added to their list, the "Multiple" list (better known as the "Multiple Listing Service" or MLS), or add your property to a free listing site such as www.MyLista.Com. If you don't want to do any of that, you can always hire a marching band to play "Louie Louie" in an impromptu Parade down the highway in front of your street.

What if there was a place where owners and realtors around the country could jointly "place" their property on a master "list," and allow buyers to search from the comfort of their homes? What about if potential buyers could select what kind of property they wanted to buy, and it would automatically emailed to them? What about a world where real estate professionals could do what they are best at: advising sellers about price and market conditions and helping buyers select the perfect home or investment property? What about that? What about a universe where we could all really be free? A universe where owners would feel comfortable knowing that their realtor is doing more than just "listing" them, and realtors would be valued. It would be a win-win-win situation! Good thing we're not in Wonderland, because nothing like this could ever happen now-a-days, Right? Wrong!

The time has come to take the real estate business from the Stone Age and bring it into the digital age. A totally free web community called MyLista.Com has done just that. The website is designed to always be free for sellers and buyers, whether you want to add property, or search for property and get email notifications when a property that meets your criteria comes online. The motto of MyLista.Com is "Let Freedom Ring." It is the place where buyers and sellers meet. At MyLista.Com, their mission is to allow all real estate information to be free... for all... for ever.
