Students may have the misfortune of being tagged with the label ´loafers´ but there´s one thing that they shouldn´t loaf around with - organizing student accommodation. In Edinburgh, for example, you need to start your hunt early as it´s a popular university and comfortable digs are sure to be snapped up first.
Some of the most popular areas for students within the city include Bruntsfield, which is close to Napier University and Edinburgh University and is just 10 minutes walk to the centre of the city. Similarly Marchmont enjoys a great location and is slightly closer to Edinburgh Uni and has good access to green space.
Close to Fountainpark is the area of Tollcross which is popular with Napier students. There´s lots of nightlife close to hand, although if you want to be a bit closer to the city centre try Castle Terrace, but beware student accommodation at decent prices are harder to come by here.
If local amenities are high on your list take a look at the student accommodation in Edinburgh´s Fountainbridge area. Although considered a reasonably quiet area you´ll find pubs, bars, a cinema, nightclub and a bowling alley. If it all comes down to the budget then look in Newington with plenty of decent lets amongst the university buildings.
When narrowing down the area you want to live in, think about the proximity to your university - after all you don´t want to be running late for lectures. If you´re a first year you might want to be in amongst the thick of it, whereas third and fourth year students might like to move towards the areas their friends live in.
Also familiarize yourself with the area to ensure it will meet all your needs. If you´re a regular gym visitor is there one close by, if you need a launderette is there one within walking distance and are there the requisite pubs, bars and supermarkets in order for you to enjoy living where you do?
Budget is important. If it´s your first time away from home you´ll need to quickly learn to budget - and that doesn´t mean prioritizing beer over dinner and living off beans. Look out for student accommodation in Edinburgh where the rent is all-inclusive so you don´t need to worry about the bills each month.
Always view your accommodation for university before entering a contract. It may look good on paper but nothing beats seeing it for yourself. You´ll soon know whether you´re happy to sacrifice a shower for the sake of a large living area, or whether the 40-inch plasma screen will make up for having no wardrobe space.
Once you´re happy that you´ve found a place you´d be happy to rent for the year check carefully with the landlord what is included in the price and what deposit you´ll have to pay. Also get an inventory for the property and double check it - otherwise you could find yourself in trouble when you move on.
Student accommodation in Edinburgh is prevalent so if you start your search early you should find your perfect rental. Once your place at the university is confirmed it´s time to start that search. Good luck!
Don´t leave it too late to find student accommodation. In Edinburgh there´s plenty of rentals available but you need to be able to source the one that is perfect for you.
